Opportunity or Deception?

Acts 27:13

New International Version (NIV)

When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.

For Meditation
The weather was terrible, but they insisted on sailing. They struggled against the strong wind and finally arrived at Fair Haven. Sensing danger ahead, Paul spoke out (Acts 27:10). They faced a shipwreck, loss of cargo, and a threat to their lives. But who cared when personal interest rises against the general good? Somebody has a reason for carrying on what they want despite the danger. Remember Jesus’ Parable of the Great Supper and the excuses the invitees gave (Luke 14:18-21)? Social and economic reasons always rule, regardless of the threat to the human soul when men must decide, or this world would not be in this mess. The owner and the ship’s captain prevailed over Paul’s better judgment, so the officer in charge of the prisoners gave the order to continue the journey.

When a light wind began blowing from the south, the sailors thought they could make it. So they pulled up anchor and sailed close to the shore of Crete” (Acts 27:13).

Is that not the case all the time, the fair-weather factor? It has always been, “We/I thought,” but it is always too late, and we have exerted the damage on ourselves. What seems like an opportunity becomes a death trap. The weather changed, and a typhoon pushed the ship into the sea (13-15).

Thank God for mercy, favor, and protection for His beloved. He stood by Paul in a dream and assured him of His protection.

Last night, an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me, and he said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What’s more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you. So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said” (21-25).

Do you belong to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ? You can be sure of His protection from the storms of life. Do you faithfully serve Him? He will ensure His purpose prevails in your life. Can you testify to His goodness? Good for you! You will see His glory. Do you believe in God’s promises and trust that what He has said will happen as He said? Go on then and confidently proclaim it to a waiting world.

God had a purpose for Paul’s imprisonment and the trip to Rome; nothing would thwart that plan. He has a purpose for your life, too, and nothing can prevent it from happening. Only walk closely with Him, tune your mind and ears to Him, hear His voice, the voice of your Shepherd (John 10:27), trust Him, and boldly proclaim His message to those in dire need of His goodness in Christ Jesus. He is our great Deliverer, even on the high seas.

But let us beware of the “gentle south wind,” those deceptive voices, and happenings around us and tune only to the voice of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. To Him be glory forever. Amen.

Pray with Me

Father, thank you for your goodness and mercy. Guide me by your Spirit to discern the deceptive opportunities and trust in your guidance and protection in Jesus. Amen.
