Absolutely Nothing!

Jeremiah 32:17

New International Version (NIV)

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

For meditation

The Lord had spoken, and Jeremiah believed it. Jerusalem was going to fall to the Babylonian siege because of the sins of the people. God had decreed exile for Judah, and they had nothing left for them but false hope. What, then, was the value of property? It didn’t make economic sense to buy a piece of land at such a time, but a land purchase is what God told Jeremiah to do.

Hanamel, son of Shallum, your uncle is going to come to you and say, Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it (Jeremiah 32:7).

Sometimes, God makes little sense. What He tells us, especially when struggling in some quagmire, cannot register in our finite and self-deluded minds. That is why the Almighty is God, and we are human. When He shifts gear to a speed beyond our comprehension, we can only respond by faith expressed in obedience.

God’s word is His very self. There is no falsehood in Him (Nu. 23:19; Ja. 1:17). Abraham learned this lesson with the birth and sacrifice of Isaac on Moriah (Gen. 21:2, 22:2). Mary had her experience with the virgin conception (Lk. 1:34). Peter learned his on the shores of Lake Gennesaret after a fruitless fishing trip (Lk. 6:5). Their obedience became opportunities to see God’s glory for the proper worship of His majesty.

Trusting in God’s word, Hanamel proposed a land sale to Jeremiah, and Jeremiah bought and received the signed deed (Jeremiah 32:9-11). Through this transaction, God promised to restore Judah after Babylon, a testament to His unwavering faithfulness:

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land (15).

Then Jeremiah prayed:

Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you (17).

Are there situations in your life you have labeled impossible? What is God telling you that makes little sense? Is there any impossibility in Him (Lk. 1:37; Matt. 19:26)? How can He be God if your situation is beyond His ability and power? If Calvary and the tomb had been more powerful for Him, how could Jesus be our Savior? These questions challenge our understanding of God’s sovereignty and power.

It all comes down to Jesus as the Self-existent and Sovereign God, the Almighty Creator of everything seen and unseen. (Colossians 1:15-17). There is nothing too difficult for Him. Absolutely nothing! As He says,

Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: Is there anything too hard for me? (Jer. 32:27).

Trust God in every circumstance and situation. Experience His glory in a mesmerizing way. May it lead you to a deeper, more profound worship of God’s majesty in Jesus, rooted in faith and obedience.

If there is anything beyond the power of Jesus, then He is not God.

Pray with Me

We confess you are God, and nothing rises beyond your infinite power. Help our finite minds to behold Your Majesty and the glory and the power for ever and ever, in Christ Jesus, amen.
