Our Incomparable God

Isaiah 40:25

New Living Translation

To whom will you compare me?
Who is my equal?” asks the Holy One.

For Meditation

Despite our circumstances, we must listen, obey, and rejoice when God speaks. It is simple, but difficult for us because we often forget the One who has spoken. If we maintain a clear image and character of God in every situation, I believe things would change.

God showed Himself to Israel and Judah as a God of comfort and hope. To assure them of this truth, He pointed to the certainty and eternality of His word (Isa. 40:1-26). He had promised to return to them and restore the nation under His rule and authority, and in that, Israel and Judah could find hope and rest. If they doubted God’s ability to fulfill that promise, it was not because there was a limitation in His power. The problem was their human limitation of understanding. For God is incomparably superior in every way to all creation.

He is incomparable as the Creator (12-17), so consider His handiwork and marvel.

He is the Eternal One (18-20). His power is limitless and without equal. When God’s people fail by comparing Him to other gods, they lead themselves to disappointment. All other gods are images of metals and carved wood adorned for worship. That is the human tragedy, which continues today in various forms in the hearts of believers. How can we hear God, believe Him when He speaks, and trust Him for our good when we have made gods of other things?

God is incomparable in His transcendence (21-24). He challenges our knowledge of creation and the foolishness of venturing to create idols (21). God sits so high above all creation and sees humans like insects. He sets the heavens in place. He places the stars like a curtain and a tent. Who are the princes and judges? Nothing! He plants them and blows them away like chaff. So, He asks you today.

To whom then will you compare me? Who is my equal? (v.25).

There is none! God is Elohim, the Mighty One, and the Creator. He has no equal. He is the Creator of the starry host, and calls each by name, sustaining them with perfection (26; Col. 1:17). Can anything hide your situation from Him? Your problems cannot make Him faint, nor can anything weary Him. Instead, He gives power to the weak and strength to the fainting (27-31).

If you can trust God’s sovereignty and wait for His providential hand, you can experience His supernatural power and ability to endure every situation, even through your darkest hour. Jesus will soon make the day dawn for you with joy and dancing.

The Lord is incomparably superior, powerful, and above alla truth for your encouragement, comfort, and hope today. Amen!

Pray with Me

To you, O Lord, I ascribe all praise, glory, honor, and thanks because you are God, and there is none other. Thank you for the comfort and hope steeped in the eternality and faithfulness of your word, because of which I can trust you through my pain and challenging situations. For Christ’s sake, amen.
