Think Before You Start It.

Proverbs 17:14

New International Version

Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; it unleashes a destructive force that can wash away the peace and harmony in your relationships. So drop the matter before a dispute breaks out, and the flood of conflict overwhelms you.

Your Encouragement

Going on the offensive can be an excellent strategy in physical warfare, especially where the most lethal blow is a sneak attack. However, in relationships, this approach is destructive. It builds distrust and erodes confidence between the individuals. Most concerning is the unending cycle of conflict in a relationship. No one takes a blow lying down. They fight back, not only to defend themselves but to win. And who is not enticed when power stares them in the face? So, when will it end if you do not invite Christ to reign over your heart and mind?

That is not an easy choice when adrenaline is pumping, and many witnesses surround you. One practical step is to pause and pray, inviting Christ to guide your thoughts and actions (James 1:19-20).

Proverbs 17:14 extends to us a warning this morning. It’s a proverb that advises against starting a quarrel, comparing it to the potential damage of breaching a dam.

Proverbs 17:14 offers us a profound warning:

“Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.”

This wisdom should not to be taken lightly, for it embodies the weight of preventing destructive conflicts.

The Message version puts it this way:

“The start of a quarrel is like a leak in a dam, so, stop it before it bursts.”

I do not know what you plan to do today because of your hurt and anger, but please, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Ask yourself these questions:

Is it worth it? Are they worth it? Will it honor God? Is it not better for them to call me a weakling for the glory of Christ?

Paul asked the Corinthians concerning disputes in 1 Cor. 6:7-8.

“Wouldn’t it be far better to just take it, to let yourselves be wronged and forget it? All you’re doing is providing fuel for more wrong, more injustice, bringing more hurt to the people of your own spiritual family,” (The Message).

For Christ’s sake, it is the best approach for your peace! So, stop it now before you flood your house with many woes.

The Hebrew word shalom, often translated ‘peace’, encapsulates the essence of our message this morning. It is a wish for complete well-being, harmony, and prosperity, and that’s what you need today. It represents the peace that comes from a deep connection with Christ.

May you, therefore, experience the shalom of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, as you let go of that quarrel you intend picking up, and have a pleasant morning in Him.

Pray with Me

I am weak when I seriously want to strike back hard at those who offend me. Please, Lord, hear my confession and strengthen me to show restraint for your name’s sake. I appreciate your grace in Christ Jesus, amen.
