John 18:38
New King James Version
Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.
For Meditation
When Jesus speaks, the truth stands before us. We cannot turn it any other way. Either we embrace Him and be set free, or deny Him and continue in our deception and torment.
Pilate knew the truth when Jesus stood in trial before him. He knew the Jewish leaders were lying about Jesus. He knew they were jealous of Him, and that they had no case to merit the time before him (Jn. 18:29-30). Yet, he gave them an audience.
He asked in helpless rapidity.
“Are you the King of the Jews? … What have you done? … You are a king, then! … What is truth?”
An interesting scene to behold in my sanctified imagination through the dialogue. Rather than interrogating Jesus, the Master’s responses interrogated Pilate (34, 36, 37b). So, who controls the events of this world? Who is the Judge? The truth stared Pilate in the face, and he struggled.
Sounds familiar?
Pilate’s problem was his perspective of himself, just as we all are sometimes. We struggle to face the truth and to admit it, opening ourselves to the painful consequences of our denials.
So, there it was. The truth put on trial before a human judge, who did not know what to do because he was sitting in the seat of the Man who stood trial before him—the Truth.
You see, Jesus is the truth (Jn. 14:6). He is the One you struggle every day to judge, interrogate, or deny. He is the Person you try to conceal—the cause of your misery. Everyone who opposes Him is fake and a liar. All stories or propositions not conforming to Him are lies. Any promise not made on His foundation is vain, and every desire but for Him is deceptive and injurious to our spiritual health. Everything rises and falls on Him, the truth. That is why He commands us to gird our waist — every aspect of our lives — with the belt of truth, the first piece of God’s armor for the believer (Eph. 6:14). It reveals the integrity of our claim as children of God and gives credence to our witness.
Remember, there is only one truth that liberates—Jesus Christ (Jn. 14:6). Embrace Him and experience life in its fullness in this world and eternally (Jn. 10:10b). Rejecting Him should not be an option. For when you walk in faith with Him, you’ll find peace and joy despite your trying circumstances. Is that not what you need today?
Shalom
