What Is In A Name

John 16:24

New King James Version

Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

For Encouragement

How does a ten-year-old boy find his brother in a big city with only his name and occupation as a taxi driver? Though he was notorious among taxi drivers in Kumasi, the nickname “Accra” became unhelpful when I got stranded there, in the capital city of the Ashanti Region in Ghana. I was running away from my father in Koforidua, the country’s Eastern Region, my birthplace. The rest of the story is for another time, but it suffices to say at this crucial point that my brother’s name didn’t have the weight I thought it did, even among his fellow taxi drivers when it mattered most to me.

But thank God I have a Brother whose name is recognizable in all creation, especially before the Almighty God. Jesus’ name is not just recognizable; it grants access into the throne room for the outpouring of grace (Rom. 5:1-2). It is the only name that receives attention before the Father and opens His heart to every petition His children on earth bring to Him.

“And in that day, you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you” (Jn. 16:23).

Children of the kingdom have received this privilege from the Father because of the finished work of Jesus for our salvation. (Phil. 2:6-11). Christ glorified the Father on earth and finished the work the Father sent Him to do (Jn. 17:4). The Father has also glorified His Son by exalting Him and giving Him a name that is above every name (Phil. 2:9). Every knee bows to the glorious name of Jesus in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and every mouth also confesses that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the God the Father (10-11).

The name of Jesus is potent with healing (Acts 3:6; 4:9-10), forgiveness (Col. 1:14), salvation (12), deliverance (16:18), and transformation (Rom. 12:2). Demons tremble in the powerful name of Jesus (James 2:19). There is power in the name of Jesus to command problems, difficulties, hindrances, both in the physical and spiritual environment, and in the skies—what the Lord calls mountains (Matt.21:21). The matchless name of Jesus carries these and much more power and authority, and our Lord has given them all to the believer by faith through the power of the Holy Spirit. How, then, can we hold human names so much higher than that of Jesus?

Let us remind ourselves today of the tremendous authority and power we have in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. With faith, righteousness, and boldness in the Spirit, we can walk in His name to live a victorious life for the Father’s glory, amen.

Pray with Me

Father, thank you for the access and possibilities that the name of Jesus gives us before you. May we know how blessed we are in Him and fear no foe, but to live in victory in every aspect of our lives. Amen.
