Trust Him to the End

“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness”-Lamentations 3:21-23

Every morning when I walk into my office and turn on my computer, I am greeted with this message from Charles Spurgeon: “And as for His failing you, never dream of it.  Hate the thought of it. The God, who has been sufficient until now, should be trusted to the end.” In this way, I am always reminded of God’s sufficiency, and my trust in Him as an intrinsic part of the faith I profess.

I came upon this quote by accident as I was aimlessly surfing the web. Isn’t it amazing the times and places God chooses to meet us? Caught in the grip of deep despondency due to the uncertainty of my future, God reminded me of His sufficiency. Somehow, I had managed to convince myself of a grim future, and in the process, had forgotten that my life is in the hands of my all-Powerful God who loves me so dearly (Rm. 8:37-39). I had allowed fear to cloud a very basic truth – that God is greater than everything. However, in that moment when He met me with Spurgeon’s quote, He reminded me of Psalm 121:1 – “I lift up my eyes unto the hills – where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Suddenly, encouragement flooded my heart, and an incredible light beamed on me and dispelled the darkness and gloom. God reminded me of the Prophet Jeremiah’s affirmation: “Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for His compassion never fails. They are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness” (Lam. 3:22-23). God’s assurance to Paul trooped in behind it. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9). Verse after verse, the Lord asserted His strength and sufficiency in my life. He reminded me of His promise to keep me, if I trusted Him (Is. 26:3). I was filled with hope and peace that only come from setting my mind on God and fully trusting Him.

Have you ever been struck by Paul’s often cited declaration of faith, “I am convinced …”? Imagine the magnitude of faith required for a person to affirm God this way when facing trials. It’s this strong conviction that strengthened Daniel to dare to disobey the king’s edict and face the hungry lions in their den (Dan. 6:10). It’s the same attitude of faith that emboldened Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to defy the king and be thrown into the fiery furnace (3:16-18 3).With the same persuasion, Job declared in great pain, “I know my redeemer lives” (Job 19: 25).

We live in a fallen world that confronts us with uncertainties every day. No one is promised tomorrow, but God’s sufficiency should be enough to sustain us. Trusting that He holds all things together should galvanize our hope in Jesus, and give us the victory for the Father’s glory(Col. 1:16-17).

So, I challenge you today to be strong and courageous in your faith. Bolster yourself with the knowledge of God’s might and unfailing power (Is. 40) and stand replete in the conviction that no matter what you face – sickness, financial difficulties, false accusations, or betrayal – God is always with you (Deut. 31:6-8) and His grace is sufficient to see you through.
