Facing Your Jerusalem?

Acts 20:22-24

New International Version (NIV)

And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.

For Meditation

  1. Have you considered that it is not Christ alone who faced Jerusalem for condemnation, but Paul also (Mark 10:32-34)? What does that tell you as a disciple of Jesus (Acts 20:22-24)?
  2. Even though he personally did not know what was going to happen to him in Jerusalem, can you observe how the Holy Spirit warned Paul that prison and hardships await him in every city (v.22-23)? Do you see how the leading of the Holy Spirit does not preclude suffering?
  3. Nonetheless, do you hear Paul’s heart in this: “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me” (v.24)? Shouldn’t that be the heartbeat of every believer of Jesus Christ – to finish the race and complete the task Christ has committed to us? Can you imagine how easier the race would become for you if that becomes your heartbeat?
  4. Can you see how that strengthened Paul’s determination to obey the Spirit’s leading despite what awaited him in Jerusalem? Can you discern his boldness and resolve to accomplish his purpose in life? Shouldn’t that encourage you also in your Christian journey?
  5. So, is there any “Jerusalem” in view for you? Are you walking on a path that promises nothing but suffering and pain for Christ’s sake? Are you led by the Holy Spirit? How are you facing it?

I pray that you can “bear up under the pain of unjust suffering because [you’re] conscious of God” (1 Pt. 2:19), so that you may be able to encourage someone who is fear-stricken and almost giving up in their suffering (2 Cor. 1:2-4).

May you consider your life worth nothing in this world, but “to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given [you]—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” (Acts 20:24).

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, amen.

Shalom
