What we listen to and how we listen to the word of God are critical to the quality of understanding and knowledge we gain. Since spiritual perception to the word of God is foundational to Christian maturity, a thoughtful consideration of what we hear should always become our best counselor.
It’s interesting how the Lord puts it. “Be careful what you hear … With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and even more” (Mk. 4:24). The time and effort we offer the Holy Spirit in every situation, particularly, in our time with Him in the word, determines the measure of knowledge He opens to our heart. He reveals much to the determined soul.
When a farmer determines to maximize his output in the field, he invests his time, energy, and mind in his work. The heat may be unbearable, and the body may ache; but the set goal drives his resolve and input. Then the Lord of the harvest takes over. He directs the seeds, soil, temperature, rain, and every other necessary condition to bring out a harvest commensurate with the farmer’s input and much more (26-29).
Christian growth is like that. It is not visceral. It is a determined effort to grow in faith. The goals we set for ourselves, the mindset we bring to the table, the time we commit to the effort, the concentration we give to it, and the submission we present to the revealed will of God become critical factors to our spiritual transformation (Rm. 12:1-2).
So, what are you listening to and how? What measure of interest and willingness to obey the revealed will of God do you invest in His word and your walk with Jesus?
We thank God for His assurance of a bounteous reward for our investment in holiness. May Christ give you much more grace, because you were diligent in your time with Him today and every other time you spend with Him.
Keep on ploughing, my friend, for your reward is great in our gracious Lord of the harvest.
Shalom
