The Cana Exchange

When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.”

John 2:3

The wedding was grand, and the guest list was filled with some high profile names. Mary, Jesus’s mother, and Jesus were there. Suddenly, murmurs of shock and disapproval pervaded the gathering. The servers retired their trays; for the bar had run dry.

Mary turned to her Son, “They have no wine” (Jn. 2:3).

Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come” (4).

A mother knows her child and can decipher meaning from bluff; so Mary turned to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you” (5). Isn’t that what God expects of all His children? Shouldn’t the word of God be our command?

The servants filled the six stone water jars nearby with water at Jesus’s word, and the party came to life again.

“Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the best till now,” the master of ceremonies said with bewilderment (10).

You see, worldly delight runs dry very quickly. It is temporal and a mockery – here today, gone tomorrow. But the delight God gives through His Spirit surpasses everything. Whoever finds it in Christ Jesus is blessed indeed. That’s the story of the miracle at Cana.

Jesus gives the Holy Spirit.to delight the hearts of all who put their trust in Him. His wine is free, pure, real, and comes with everlasting life. You cannot have enough of it. You can drink your heart out without the fear of a hangover. It satisfies the soul’s thirst and gladdens the heart with contentment. It is strange how anybody would prefer the bottle’s fleeting delight to that of the Spirit’s. Believe me, there is no comparison. I have drunk from both sources, and I will never switch back to the bottle. Never!

You who are stuck on the bottle, Jesus calls you today to come and drink from Him.  Everyone who drinks from the world’s bottle will be thirsty again, “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (4:13-14).

So, take Jesus at His word, and you will soon realize the folly of bankrupting yourself and home over something that never satisfies. You will recognize the extent of the devastation with which the world’s delight has visited your home and relationships. Praise the Lord that with the Spirit’s delight, you will never be left hanging and disgraced, or worried like the newlywed couple at Cana.
