Luke 9:35
New King James Version
And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!”
For Meditation
There they stood—the three representatives of the redemption plan of God—talking about the final unfolding of the grace of God.
Moses represented the era of the law. Elijah pioneered the prophetic Ministry to a nation that had lost its way and needed to hear from God. Then came Jesus, the One of whom the law and the prophets spoke—the Son of God and Messiah.
He was the pillar of fire and of the cloud that led His people through the wilderness (Exodus 13:21), and the fire that consumed the sacrifice of Elijah on the altar on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:38-39). He was also the fire that fell on His people at Pentecost and empowered them for the gospel program (Acts 2:2-4). Each had its unique message for the period in which they ministered.
Look up to Him and be healed, was the message of Moses (Numbers 21:8-9). When the Israelites gradually slipped away from God, Elijah burst onto the scene and challenged them to turn to Him and live (1 Kings 18:21). Then, at the culmination of His redemption plan, Jesus came and authoritatively declared to the entire world: Believe in me and receive eternal life.
Each message is for us today, just as they applied to the people of their time. All were a call to salvation and a life of absolute obedience to the Eternal King in His kingdom. It gets better.
“This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” the Father spoke (Mark 9:7).
What you could not do to gain eternal life, the Father said, His Beloved Son is here to fulfill for your sake—that you will not die. So listen to Him and live.
The question today is, have you listened to Him? What have you done with what you have heard? Have you believed in Him who alone has life to offer to the penitent sinner who comes to Him? Are you telling others who have to hear?
