Psalm 37:25
New International Version
I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread.
For meditation
The two young people sat for coffee at the airport, waiting to catch their flight.
As they sipped their coffee, the young man, driven by the societal pressure to succeed, shared his perspective, “The time to make money is now, sister! Get it, by hook or crook, or live to regret it when age catches up with you.”
“So true, brother! That’s why I can not commit to anything serious in church, even though I sense a call here and there. Who wants their children to curse them for being irresponsible in their prime age?” the young lady said.
A couple sitting nearby smiled. They have trusted God’s faithfulness all their lives, and they know His goodness. Now gray-haired, and with grace adorning them, they looked into each other’s eyes and said, with the husband leading.
“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken…”
“Or their children begging for bread” (Psalm 37:25), his dear wife closing the quotation with equal candor and grace.
The young man and his lady friend looked at them with a sneer, got up, and walked away.
What a profound testimony from the older couple!
Isn’t it nice to see such time-tested faith on display in the public square? Can you feel their expression of confidence in our God who honors integrity, never turns His back on His faithful servants, and blesses the children of those who fear Him (Daniel 6:4, 22; Psalm 103:17; 112:1-9)? What is your experience with Him, and can you testify about it when you have to, anytime and anywhere?
I hope you’ll consider David’s affirmation in this Psalm and strive for the peace that comes to the faithful righteous in their prime years. I encourage you to read and reflect on Psalm 112 for inspiration. Don’t let Job’s confession, “What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me” (Job 3:25) become yours. Instead, trust in the Lord’s unfailing love and faithfulness. Dedicate your life to Christ and commit to guiding your children on the path of righteousness. Amen!
