Celebrating Our Victory Over Death.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

New Living Translation (NLT)

O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

For meditation

Why is death so shocking, so painful, and so feared? Is it our natural tendency to be afraid of death?

Death is feared if the only life we know is the now. Uncertainty after death haunts many. Others dread leaving behind accumulated wealth, while some simply fear separation from loved ones. With these reasons in mind, what drives your own fear of death?

Here, the Bible provides a straightforward answer: the sting of death is sin (1 Cor. 15:56), and sin gains its power from the law. What we should fear is spiritual death because it separates the dead from God eternally, which is the consequence of sin.

It all started in the Garden of Eden with the first couple—Adam and Eve. Their disobedience gave way to sin (Gen. 3:6) that brought God’s swift judgment of death, which is separation from God (Rom. 6:23).

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die” (2:16-17).

Adam and Eve listened to the serpent (3:4-5) and did what their hearts desired (6). God said, “You will certainly die,” but the deceiver said, “You will not certainly die,” and that became humanity’s sentence of death. Until the rescue at Calvary (Gal. 4:4-5; Col. 1:13-14), the devil used his usurped power to hold humanity in slavery by the fear of death (Heb. 2:14-15).

By His death, Jesus atoned for the sins of the world (1 Jn. 2:2). Paul triumphantly taunts death, declaring its sting has been lost because of Christ’s victory in 1 Cor. 15:55.

Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?

Through His resurrection, Christ removed both the victory and the sting of death. By reconciling us to God and offering the hope of eternal life, believers no longer need to fear death. This is the Bible’s central message: in Christ, death loses its threat (Rom. 5:10; Rom. 5:2; Col. 1:27).

Now, as we look forward with hope to our resurrection in Him (1 Thess. 4:13-17), we can rejoice and celebrate our assured victory over death, confidently declaring freedom from its fear through Christ Jesus. Amen.

As painful as death may seem to you now, you can draw lasting strength and comfort from knowing that because you believe in Jesus, you will surely live even though you die (Jn. 11:25), and death cannot hold you captive, just as it could not hold our Master in the grave. That’s why He is Lord! As the grave gave way to Christ on the third day, so will it give way to you with hope and certainty when Christ comes for His bride, His Church, of which you are a part because you have trusted Him with your life!

As you celebrate your victory over death in Christ, share this hope-filled Good News with all who will listen, that they too may receive new life in Christ.

Shalom

Pray with Me

Father, I thank you that through Jesus, you have taken the sting out of death and given me victory over it. There is no fear in death because our resurrected Lord stands to receive us when You finally call us home or when Christ comes for His bride, whichever comes first. I celebrate my victory over death today and bow in worship before your throne of grace in Him. Amen.
