Isaiah 43:2
New International Version (NIV)
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For Meditation
When a child feels uncertain and afraid, a parent should reassure and calm the child. Like a caring parent putting a child to bed, the parent’s presence and soothing words ease the child’s mind.
Our Father in heaven does this for His redeemed children when fear overwhelms us. We naturally fear because of our sinful nature (Gen. 3:10); so, the Lord often says, “Do not fear,” and similar phrases throughout the Bible.
These are the most comforting words when our fears need calming. No matter what threatens our peace—an uncertain future, loss, or adversity—we can rely on our Father’s promise of unfailing presence (Heb. 13:5). This makes Isaiah 43:1-13 so powerful and reassuring.
Look at the last verses of Isaiah 42 and notice that the Babylonian exiles faced despondency, uncertainty, and fear. What would their future be? Imagine their mood when they read these words from the Lord:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine (Isa. 43:1).
This assurance came not from any human or spirit. These are Yahweh’s words, the Self-existent, Sovereign God who created and redeemed them from Egypt, through the Red Sea and the Jordan, and gave them a homeland (Gen. 12:1-3; Deut. 7:6-11). Israel is His covenant nation and people—His very own. He shows His special attachment to Abraham’s descendants by using both Jacob and Israel to refer to the nation. He calls them by name like a shepherd calls his sheep, telling them not to fear because He will always be with them and protect them.
The waters, rivers, and fire stood for the many dangers, hard work, and tough times the Israelites would keep facing (Isa. 43:2). But they should remember that, just as He was with them before and saved them from the Red Sea (Exod. 14:15-30), the Jordan River floodwaters (Joshua 3:14-17), and the fire pit of King Nebuchadnezzar (Dan. 3:19-27), He will always be with them in the same way. How comforting is that?
God’s faithful presence and protection, promised in Isaiah, is also ours through Jesus Christ. He has fulfilled all of God’s promises for our sake. As believers, the agency of the indwelling Holy Spirit unites us to Christ—assuring us that God’s presence is not just for Israel but for all who trust in Jesus (Matthew 28:20; John 14:16-17). We confidently claim this promise and praise God for His loving-kindness.
What is challenging your peace today? Whatever fear you face, claim Christ’s promise of peace. By faith, confront your storm and tell your raging soul, “Peace!” Be still!
Do not let fear take hold—God’s promise of His Presence stands with you. Recall His faithfulness and help in times of need (the Exodus, 1 Kings 19; Daniel 3; 6; Lk. 8; Acts 16). Will you trust Him today?
Pray with Me
Thank you, Father, for your promised presence with me through all of life’s turmoil. I trust you and praise you for easing my fears. With confidence in your faithfulness, I stand firm. In Jesus’ name.
