Do two walk together
unless they have agreed to do so?

It is a beauty and delight to watch two synchronized swimmers performing in perfect unity. One cannot help but admire the artistic display and precision in every move they make. The question of how they do it has a simple answer. The two swimmers get every routine down to almost perfection by agreeing, heart and mind, to work together. Of course, the top prize is their goal; being the best synchronized team delights them the most. That stays with the spectators. Therefore, they sacrifice their individual interests and differences to be in one accord as a team.

Before all this takes place, the two swimmers must work as a team; then, based on their agreement, they dive into their routine. Nothing can happen without first agreeing to work together.

The prophet Amos brought a series of questions to Israel to show God’s imminent judgment because they had failed to walk with Him according to the terms of His unique covenant with them. In the first question, He asked:

Do two walk together unless they agree to do so? (Amos 3:3).

God had covenanted with Israel and given them His laws and practices for a closer walk together—to watch over and care for them. But Israel had failed by walking in their own oppressive ways, disregarding their privileged position. How then could they walk together when Israel had strayed from the covenant terms? How could He bless them when Israel was not walking in agreement? Only chastisement remained.

Paul’s statement in Galatians 3:16 echoes the same sentiment. The believer must walk in agreement with the Holy Spirit for victorious living. If we break this agreement, we risk living a defeated life in the flesh with all its consequences.

We cannot walk with Christ when we disagree with certain portions of His word, nor live for Him and disregard or rationalize Scripture. How can we become like Him when we keep finding fault with His discipline or refuse the ministry of the word in our lives and expect to live in harmony with Him (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

It is better to put away our stubbornness and arguments and decide to walk with the Lord in perfect agreement like synchronized swimmers do with each other. As God’s synchronized swimming partner, you must agree for the Holy Spirit to design every swim and be the choreographer, director, and team member at the same time if we want to live a victorious life. We must, because of His covenant with us in Jesus’ blood.

His holiness demands that we walk with Him in this way to bring honor to Him in the church, fellowships, marriage and family life, businesses, friendships, and all our relationships. Our witness to the unbelieving world is stronger by such a synchronized walk with the Holy Spirit.

Pray with Me

Father, I confess the stubbornness that takes me away from you many times. I am prone to wander away from you, the God whom I love. Please strengthen me in my resolve to walk with you with integrity for your glory in Jesus’ matchless name. Amen.
