Eschewing Selfishness Is Christlike

Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your interests, but each of you to the interests of others.

Selfishness is a basic human problem that has affected people since the time of Eden and still shapes our lives today.

The damaging impact of selfishness is clear in our relationships, families, workplaces, and every place where decisions are made. For a typical example, recall the story of Solomon, when two women brought their case to the young king (1 Kings 3:16-27).

The second woman said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!” (26b). Her words show how selfishness can lead to cruelty when people put themselves first.

However, the first woman begged, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” (26a). She gave up her own rights to save her child’s life, showing real selflessness.

Selflessness strengthens our relationships and makes them more meaningful. We can be thankful that, even before time began, Jesus showed us true selflessness (Eph. 1:4; Phil. 2:6-7; Heb. 2:14-15). When we embrace what Christ did for us on the cross, it should move us to share our lives with others for His glory.

We should remember that the enemy often acts out of selfishness to “steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10), just like the second woman in Solomon’s story. We thank God for Jesus, whose sacrifice provides us with life “to the full.” Share this fullness of life in Christ with someone in need, carefully listening to a broken friend without interrupting or making it all about you, or mentoring a struggling youth on the job, neighborhood, or in church. They are Christlike acts that heal, strengthen, and restore relationships. 

Let us steer clear of selfish ambition in our relationships. With humility, we can give of ourselves to help others, following Jesus’ example of selflessness.

Pray with Me

Lord, please help me overcome any selfish tendency in every aspect of my life. In humility, help me hold the interests of others high in my considerations and decisions for the glory of your name in Christ. Amen.
