The Value of A Father’s Blessing

1 Chronicles 22:12

New International Version

May the Lord give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God.

For Meditation

Solomon is now firmly established as king over Israel. He followed his father’s instructions and secured his position. With the nation stable, he gathers Israel’s leaders—the generals, captains, judges, and clan leaders—and leads them to Gibeon to thank the Lord for his kingship (2 Chron. 1:2-3). Like his father, Solomon knows the importance of putting God first, so he offers a thousand burnt offerings in worship (6). That night, God appears to Solomon and says, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you (2 Chron. 1:7).

When God gives him this open invitation, Solomon contemplates his options and seeks wise counsel before answering.

At this critical moment, Solomon responds, “Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours (8-10)?”

Solomon’s wise request makes us think about where his wisdom came from and how he could ask God for something so thoughtful.

Remember David’s blessing to Solomon as he entrusted him with the temple project: “May the Lord give you discretion and understanding as he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God (1 Chron. 22:12-13).” It’s easy to imagine this blessing resonating with Solomon at that pivotal moment before God (2 Chron. 1:7).

David’s legacy to Solomon shows how a father’s advice and blessing can shape his children’s lives. This is something every father can be proud of.

Fathers should never underestimate how much their guidance can impact their children, particularly during these trying times. The words and guidance we offer may seem insignificant, but they can have a lasting impact when our children face important decisions in the future.

Let’s raise our children to walk closely with God, and may the blessings we speak over them become sound foundations for their choices in life, in Jesus’ matchless name. Amen!

Pray with Me

Our dear heavenly Father, we thank you for all fathers. Help us model our lives after you so we may guide our children after your heart, in Jesus’ matchless name. Amen!
