Better a little with the fear of the Lord
    than great wealth with turmoil.

Why do we rush through life as if we are racing against an invisible clock? Where are we really headed, and why do we scatter our days with barely a moment for ourselves or those we cherish? When will we finally decide that what we have is enough, and allow ourselves the grace to pause and savor our blessings?

As we strive to provide comfort for our families, do we ever notice the burdens our sacrifices place on those we love most—our spouses and children? If our journey ended today, who would truly benefit from the treasures we worked ourselves to exhaustion to gather (Eccl. 6:1-2)?

What victory is there if, in chasing our dreams, we leave a trail of brokenness behind? Can any ambition justify the loss of those we love or the joy that comes from the Lord?

And where is God in all our striving? What gain is there if we lose our soul (Matt. 16:26), and cry in anguish from eternal perdition (Lk. 16:23-24)? As Proverbs 15:16 says, “Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil.” 

So, could we allow ourselves to slow down and truly breathe? Might we find joy in the simple gifts we already possess, honoring God as we do? Can we let go of the endless chase for “great wealth,” which only stirs up unrest within and chaos around us?

If we examine our hearts amid all this striving, can we truly say our spirits are satisfied? Can we confidently claim a deep closeness with Christ?

I hope we heed the wisdom of King Solomon, who explored every path and shared his lessons in Ecclesiastes, offering us a treasury of proverbs to light our journey with God.

May we appreciate what we have by recognizing that “godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and we will take nothing out of it” (1 Tim. 6:3-4); and may we enjoy our families, with the peace only Christ gives to the contented heart in Himself (Phil. 4:7).

Father, help me be content with what I have as I make godliness my focus in life. Amen.
