Living With A Purposeful

Living With A PurposeMark 10:32

New International Version

They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.

For Encouragement

When we live with purpose, we gain the courage and confidence to face life’s challenges, as Christ did in God’s will. We do not shy away from life’s obstacles; we take them on directly as essential parts of life’s journey.

In Mark 10:32-34, Jesus turned His face toward Jerusalem in His passion week. He had God to reveal to the world, a sacrifice to offer, salvation to bring, and His Father to glorify. He walked boldly toward the city that would reject and execute Him. He was steadfast in fulfilling His Father’s will and did not shrink back. Instead, He set His face like flint toward the goal.

Leading the way on His final journey, Jesus walked ahead of His disciples, fearless and purposeful. He displayed His leadership to the astonishment of His disciples and the terror of others, and that should mirror our own Christian walk. He guides us directly into the heart of His mission.

When we boldly face our own trials, we can take heart knowing Christ has already walked this road and leads us to victory.

Like the disciples, we may let fear cloud our faith. However, just as Jesus addressed this by pulling the Twelve aside and honestly preparing them for what lay ahead, and did not leave them to wallow in their fears, He does the same for us, offering us the truth and His presence instead of false comfort. He does not diminish life’s tough situations and dangers, nor numb our feelings through them. Instead, He makes us face the realities of every situation under His watchful eyes (v.33).

Facing the realities of a daunting future in His presence awakens our faith and strengthens our resolve, reminding us of His promised victory: “Three days later [I] will rise” (34).

This is our comfort for today: Though following Christ means facing hardship, He goes before us and has already won the victory.

What a timely reminder as you journey toward your own Jerusalem.

Let Us Pray Together

Father, we thank you for the example of Christ, who lived purposefully to accomplish your will to bring us salvation. May your Spirit strengthen our weakness in life’s storms as we keep our gaze on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. In Him we give you praise. Amen.
