Hopeful Expectation
Philippians 1:19
New International Version (NIV)
I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
For Meditation
The story of Aku and her husband offers a powerful illustration of waiting, faith, and hope. Joe has been living in the United States of America (USA) for the past eight years, while Aku has lived in her native Ghana since their marriage nine years ago. They were friends in school and grew to know each other very well. When Joe proposed, Aku didn’t need another moment to respond. She had grown to love him during their friendship, but she did not think Joe saw her in the same way. Not wanting to ruin their friendship, Aku had suppressed her feelings and did so well. As they stood before the minister and family, Aku and Joe felt destined for each other.
A year later, Joe received a scholarship to an Ivy League college and left for graduate school in the USA. Their plan to reunite after two years hasn’t worked out. An enviable job offer keeps Joe in the USA, while three visa denials prevent Aku from joining him. Yet Aku is undaunted. She remains hopeful, guided by her faith in Christ and the support of her friends.
Like Aku, who feels separated from her husband and hopeful for God’s help, Paul may have felt similarly when he wrote to the Philippian church from prison. He felt apart from the church he loved (Phil. 1:3), and wanted them to know how much he missed their fellowship and working together (4-6). Grateful for their love, Paul wanted them to know he hoped for his release because of their prayers and the Spirit of Jesus Christ (1:19).
Circumstances that leave you waiting for God’s intervention may shape your story, like many others. Relief can sometimes feel just out of reach, yet the testimonies and enduring faith of others offer hope. Paul relied on the prayers of fellow believers and the Holy Spirit’s help for deliverance from prison. Friends and church family who are praying for you surround you; their offerings rising to God as a sweet fragrance. Trust and persevere, confident that relief will come. Remember the promise in Isaiah 40:31, “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” As you wait, take heart that God will renew your strength and fill you with hope.
We cannot give up when the saints, propelled by the Holy Spirit, intercede for us before the Father in Jesus’ name. Through our united faith and prayer, hope endures. So we pray for someone who may be enduring a season of waiting or difficulty and reach out to them with a word of encouragement. Such fellowship makes our hope visible as a powerful testimony to Christ.
Pray with Me
