Can We Slow Down A Bit?

Proverbs 15:16

New International Version (NIV)

Better a little with the fear of the Lord
    than great wealth with turmoil.

For Meditation

Why do we rush through life and forget to care for ourselves and those we love? When will we appreciate what we have and take time to enjoy God and His blessings?

We work hard to give our families comfort, but sometimes we miss how much stress this can cause them. If something happened to us today, who would really benefit from everything we have collected? Fortunately, it is never too late to make changes. We can shift our focus, care for those we love, and create new habits that put relationships and faith at the center. With even small steps, we can start living with more intention and hope, knowing that God’s grace covers us and guides our journey.

If we lose what matters most, like our marriages, families, and relationships, while chasing our biggest dreams, we gain nothing. Even if success seems within reach, we might end up sacrificing our loved ones and the joy that comes from God. Can we take a moment to appreciate what we have and follow God’s wisdom (Prov. 15:16a)? Is aggresively chasing wealth really worth the stress it brings? When we think about our spiritual lives, do we feel fulfilled? Are we close to Christ?

To better understand this, remember what King Solomon said. He purposefully experienced everything and wrote, “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind” (Eccl. 1:14). Today, it’s easy for us to feel the same way when we work so hard, chase after success, or accumulate more, only to end up feeling empty or dissatisfied. Solomon reminds us about the danger of focusing only on worldly achievements. It causes us to miss what truly matters: spiritual wealth. His conclusion is classic.

“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind” (Eccl. 12:13).

Jesus adds, “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Matt. 16:26). The Lord Jesus reminds us to consider our priorities, making God first in everything and keeping our relationships on the road to success.

Paul ties everything together in his first letter to Timothy when he wrote: “Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and we can take nothing out of it” (1 Tim. 6:6-7).

Therefore, we value our families, accept the peace only Christ can give, and appreciate that real fulfillment comes from knowing God through Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7). The journey of faith is long, so we need one another, encouraging ourselves and praying together.

Pray with Me

Lord, help me appreciate your provision for each day, and to know that true joy comes only through Jesus, as the Holy Spirit produces in our hearts. That is the bedrock of contentment and the peace Christ gives us. Thank you, Father, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
