The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”

Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”

For Meditation

After King Saul and his son Jonathan died on Mount Gilboa, the palace was thrown into confusion. Amid it, a nurse tried to rescue Jonathan’s young son, Mephibosheth, but he fell and became disabled in both feet. At just five years old, Mephibosheth lost his father and his future as heir. When David became king, Mephibosheth moved to the distant town of Lo Debar, where he lived in hardship and obscurity. Then, a message from Jerusalem changed everything: King David said he would not eat until Mephibosheth joined him at the royal table.

In that distant town of Lo Debar, a barren land of isolation, poverty, and forgotten potential, a call of grace came to Mephibosheth. God works in mysterious ways. He gently lifts those who are hurting and cares for people whom others ignore.

God’s presence gives new strength to those who are tired and hope to those who feel discouraged. Even when everything seems lost, He gives grace to those who trust Him.

Do you remember Moses as a fugitive on the far side of Horeb and how God’s call came to Him in the burning bush (Ex. 3:1-4)? Think also about Jephthah (Judges 11:4-7), David (1 Sam. 16:11-13; 22:1-2), Elijah (1 Kings 19:3-9), and Paul (Acts 11:25-26), and how God changed their stories for eternity.  

Have you tasted the goodness of God before, and felt the comfort of His grace during times of loss or loneliness? Beloved of the Lord and saved by grace. You cannot deny that the ever-flowing grace from Calvary made a difference in your life.

What then are you afraid of today? Is there a burden that is too great for God’s grace through Christ Jesus? Is there a disqualification in your life that Christ cannot overrule? The Hebrews 4:16 invitation to approach His throne with confidence to receive grace and find mercy still stands. Will you take it?

I urge you to rise above discouragement and trust in the endless possibilities and strength found in our Lord Jesus Christ. Do not let your circumstances define who you are. Keep hope alive in Him, remembering that when all opportunities cease and everything else fades, Christ Jesus remains.

Let Us Pray

Father, thank you for your Son, Jesus Messiah, the Lord of second chances, the One who turns our mourning into joyful dancing and gives us a new song to praise you. I am now sure that the trouble I feared will not decide how my life ends because of your grace in Him. Amen.
