Zechariah 9:11
New International Version
As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
For Meditation
Who are we that the King of glory would notice us? Who are we that He should consider our situation?
We raced headlong down the highway of ruin, our engines powered by selfishness and rebellion. What claim could we ever dare to make? What right did we ever possess before the Most High?
What hope could eternity hold for us but unending darkness and devastation? Who, through all the ages, could ever break us free from the icy grip of the grave?
In that place of utter hopelessness, I heard Love whisper, “Yes, I will!” Mercy and grace echoed the promise from eternity past, meeting on Calvary to erase my sins and open the path to the greatest reconciliation ever known.
“Is this a dream?” I wondered. How could the very One I wounded most deeply choose such a costly and humiliating rescue for me?
Yet you smiled and sought me out. You walked with me, broke bread at my table, and filled my heart with wisdom. Still, I turned my back on you. I failed you in your hour of need. I left you alone in the garden and denied your very name. What a wretched soul I am! How could I ever be worthy of the grace poured out in your suffering on the cross? Yet, you chose me anyway.
Lord Jesus, you endured my suffering and shame because Love had said “Yes”. You bled and died because mercy and grace had kissed before time began. You buried my sins in the grave and drew me out of the bottomless pit in your resurrection—giving me victory over death, my tormentor for ages past.
In my wonder, you said to me, “I did it all for you. I have covenanted with you in my blood, and I will see you soon in My Father’s house. But until then, go call others to come and drink from my eternal fountain of love.” With that, you left me, but not alone. Israel missed you (Zech. 9:9-11); but I didn’t!
So, thank you for the Comforter you gave to chaperone us to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb (Rev. 19:9), beautifully adorned in your garment of righteousness (Is. 61:10). Thank you, that because of the covenant in your blood (Lk. 22:20), we can live with our heads held high; trusting in your faithful promises and looking forward to that day when you will drink the fruit of the vine anew with us in your Father, and our Father’s Kingdom (Matt. 26:29).
Until that day arrives, we lay everything at your feet. Yet, knowing how fragile we are, hold us up with your grace until you return, our Lord and Savior King. Amen!
Shalom
