The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.

Reading this scripture, I am reminded of the bold words painted on my cousin’s commercial vehicle, a phrase that became his identity: “Are You Ready?” Before Israel could step into the Promised Land, Moses, their steadfast leader, gathered them to renew their covenant with God. He painted a vivid picture of blessings for those who obeyed and warnings of judgment for those who turned away. In truth, he was asking the same question: Are you prepared to embrace the blessings that follow obedience, or will you risk the consequences of disobedience?

Israel’s journey was fraught with struggle, especially after the generation that escaped Egypt faded away with Joshua and Caleb. During the era of the Judges, the nation found itself, again and again, at the mercy of foreign oppressors, a direct result of its disobedience.

This timeless principle still speaks to us under the New Covenant. Jesus Christ made it clear that our obedience is the true mark of our love and discipleship (Jn. 14:15, 23). He promised the Holy Spirit as a gift to those who follow His commands. So I ask you: Are you truly ready to welcome heaven’s blessings today, and have you prepared your heart through obedience?

Can you picture the storehouse of heaven flung wide open, God’s abundance pouring out without limit (Deut. 28:12)? Or do you have besetting sins in your life you have to confess and forsake as you prepare to receive your blessing? 

Do you grasp the importance of the early and latter rains to the farmer’s hope? Can you see gentle rain falling at just the right moment, preparing the soil for a fruitful harvest?

Your field may be the place where you work each day. Whether you drive, teach, heal, or serve in another way, can you imagine divine favor being poured out over your daily labor (28c)? Have you tasted what it is to have the Lord bless the work of your hands?

This blessing is within your reach, “if you obey the LORD your God” (1-2), as He wills. Is this really too much to ask?

I encourage you to remember the Rich Young Ruler, who walked away from God’s grace and lost everything (Luke 18:22-23).

May you, like Abraham, have the courage to lay whatever God asks on the altar of grace (Gen. 22). And may you receive the beautiful blessing that comes from Jesus, our God and Provider.

Pray with Me

Heavenly Father, thank you for the many blessings you have given me through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through His perfect obedience, you have granted me the power of your Spirit to live in obedience for your glory and honor. Please continue to strengthen me so that I do not fall back into disobedience, as Israel did. I pray in Jesus’ matchless name. Amen.
